In line with its mandate to support vulnerable populations affected by emergencies, the State Department for Special Programmes has extended immediate humanitarian assistance to over 100 families displaced by a fire that broke out in Mukuru Kwa Njenga earlier this week. Responding with urgency and compassion, the department coordinated a relief package that included 100 bags of rice (50kg each), 100 bags of beans (50kg each), 200 blankets, 100 mattresses, 10 boxes of soap, and 3 bales of sanitary pads. The intervention aims to provide immediate comfort and restore a sense of dignity to the affected families as they begin the process of recovery. Officials from the department were on the ground to oversee the distribution and engage with local leaders and residents, reinforcing the government’s commitment to being present and responsive in times of crisis. This latest intervention highlights the department’s ongoing mission to alleviate the suffering of disaster-affected populations across Kenya. This morning, the State Department for Special Programmes joined national leaders in witnessing a significant step toward inclusive urban development as President William Ruto officially handed over 1,080 completed housing units in New Mukuru, Nairobi. In attendance were Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries—including PS Ismail Maalim—and other senior government officials. The occasion marked a major milestone in the government’s Affordable Housing Program. Addressing residents, President Ruto emphasized the symbolic and socio-economic significance of the initiative. “These keys do not just open doors; they unlock opportunity, safety, pride, equity, and intergenerational upliftment,” he remarked. Reiterating earlier commitments, the President highlighted the transformative potential of housing in economic recovery, especially in the wake of global disruptions. “This project is living proof that investing in housing stimulates local economies. Jobs are created, businesses grow, and communities thrive.” The New Mukuru Housing Project, once complete, will deliver a total of 13,248 housing units. Already, over KSh11 billion has been directly injected into construction and neighborhood development. In economic terms, for every shilling invested, an additional KSh2.50 is generated through supporting sectors—from Jua Kali artisans to Mama Mboga traders. The event served not only as a handover ceremony, but as a testament to the Government’s commitment to inclusive development and community resilience.
